Overwhelmed by Your House? Where to Start Decluttering (and Who Can Help)

If you're standing in your living room staring at the piles and thinking, "I don't even know where to begin," you are not alone! This is the number one thing I hear from busy moms, and I promise it's fixable.

Short answer: start small, start with the easy stuff, and start with how you feel, not how much you have.

Here's the path I use as a KonMari Platinum Consultant:

1. Start with a clear picture of what you want.
Before you touch a single item, ask yourself: What is my ideal life? What is important to me? How do I want this space to serve me? That answer becomes your compass for every decision.

2. Begin with clothes, not the kitchen or the sentimental boxes.
Clothes are the easiest category to learn on. You build your "does this spark joy?" muscle before you get to the harder stuff like photos and keepsakes.

3. Pull everything out of one category and put it in one spot.
Seeing it all together is eye-opening (and a little shocking, in a good way). It's hard to fix what you can't see! Sometimes there is resistance to this step, but trust me: TAKE IT OUT OF ITS HOME. There seems to be a change of energy in how you view the item when you take it out of its regular spot. You're also forced into decision-making mode, and you can tune into that "spark joy" feeling even better. Which brings us to our next step...

4. Hold each item and notice how it feels.
Joy check time! "Tokimeki" is the Japanese word for that flutter of excitement you feel in your body. That rise means keep. If you feel a downer, you can thank the item and let it go.

Why overwhelm happens (it's not you!)
Decluttering isn't really about stuff. It's a mindset shift first and a physical process second. When we change our relationship with our things, the clutter stops coming back.

Is there someone who can help me declutter and organize?
Yes! I'm Ami, a KonMari Platinum Consultant here in San Antonio. I help busy families and overwhelmed moms declutter and organize their homes, in person or virtually. We start with how you want your home to feel, then work through it step by step, so you're not facing it alone. 💛
